Kids May Get Their Hands or Fingers Caught in Easy-Bake Ovens, Risking Burns

July 19, 2007 -- Government officials today issued this year's second product recall for Easy-Bake Ovens and warned adults to take the toy electric ovens away from kids.

The Easy-Bake Oven is a purple and pink plastic oven that resembles a kitchen range with four burners on top and a front-loading oven. “Easy-Bake” is printed on the front of the oven. Model number 65805 and “Hasbro” are stamped into the plastic on the back of the recalled ovens.

"Young children can insert their hands into the oven's front opening and get their hands or fingers caught, posing entrapment and burn risks," states the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Nearly a million Easy-Bake Ovens are involved in the recall. Those Easy-Bake ovens were sold nationwide starting in May 2006. Easy-Bake Ovens sold before May 2006 aren't included in the recall.

2nd Recall for Easy-Bake Ovens

In February, Easy-Bake Ovens were recalled for repair because of the same risk. At the time, Easy-Bake had received 29 reports of children getting their hands or fingers caught in the oven's opening, including five reports of burns, according to the CPSC.

Today, Easy-Bake announced that it now has received reports of 249 children getting their hands caught in the oven's opening, including 17 reports of burns, 16 of which were reported as second- and third-degree burns.

Easy-Bake, a division of Hasbro, has also gotten one report of a serious burn that required partial finger amputation in a 5-year-old girl.

Today's recall announcement doesn't mention repairing the Easy-Bake Ovens. Instead, it warns consumers to immediately stop using the ovens, including those that were repaired since February.

Easy-Bake will provide a voucher for Hasbro products to people with recalled Easy-Bake Ovens.
