We'll have you lay down with our tummy here and your head in the hole there.
Eleven-year old Lauren Crandall isn't afraid of needles. In fact, she likes getting acupuncture treatments.
Pretty much like a couple minutes after, I feel better and more relaxed.
Lauren has fibromyalgia, a chronic condition with symptoms ranging from fatigue to chronic pain.
What I use acupuncture is for, is for pain management, mainly: Muscular pain, headaches, stomach pain.
Doctor Lynn Rusy (RUSS-ee) is a pediatric anesthesiologist, with training in acupuncture. She says the ancient Chinese treatment has a sound medical basis.
When needles are in place in certain parts in the body, it stimulates the release of endorphins from the body, from the brain, that are natural pain, pain relieving agents.
Doctor Rusy says patients often rely too long on traditional medicine before trying acupuncture.
It's gonna take a lot of acupuncture to even move the energy in their body and get them better again. But frequently, it works!
I can tell your muscles are sore today, Lauren, they're really jumping under my fingers.
But what most kids want to know is…does it hurt? Lauren says in comparison to shots at the doctor, no.
The baby shots at the doctor's are probably 3 or 4, and these are probably like a 1 and 2.
A tolerable treatment to help ease Lauren's achy condition. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
