Be it in the pool, on a bike, or on the road... Kids love to be on the go. But few think about safety when there's fun to be had.
Wearing seat belts, helmets, uh, diving feet first, just making better decisions.
Pete Collman devotes his life to making sure others don't end up where he is. He teaches a program called think first - helping school kids learn the techniques of avoiding catastrophic injuries…while maintaining an active lifestyle.
I want kids to understand that they can have fun, but they can do it safer. We always say use your mind to protect your body.
14-thousand children, students just like these, hear his message each year. He hopes he never sees them wind up at the rehab hospital where he works.
It looks like a high school right now. I mean I hate to say that, but, uh, we see a lot of teenagers, a lot of 20-somethings.
The kids are getting the message.
He said in the beginning it took him 5 hours to get ready in the morning and that sent a message to me.
I swim and I think, I need to be a lot more careful when I do my dive.
You should always wear your seatbelt and even if your parents don't.
So wear the protective gear you know you need. And share the message at home.
I always tell parents to lead by example and wear your seat belts and your kids will emulate that. Wear your helmets when you're biking, the kids will follow up on that.
And always - think first. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
