These are all the foods she could eat when she was on the diet.
Five years ago, Kate Lynch put crayon to paper to document her little sister Grace's ordeal with epilepsy.
There's one when she was in the hospital bed and she was drinking an eggnog shake.
Food is a big part of the story. According to Grace, now eight, her epilepsy stopped because of a 'magic diet'.
Because it helped my boo-boos go away.
Doctors call it the ketogenic (KEE-toh-JEN-ik) diet. Rich in fat and low in carbohydrates, it can reduce and sometimes even stop seizures in kids with certain types of epilepsy.
One condition is infantile spasms, another one's called tuberous sclerosis. And another one is called Doose syndrome or myoclonic-astatic epilepsy and now in retrospect, it's probably the case that Gracie had this condition.
But putting a child on a strict diet isn't easy. So to help Grace understand what was happening, the family got creative.
When it came time to, for her to get admitted at Johns Hopkins for the, they fast for 48 hours before they start the diet, we decided to, to make another story.
The repetitiveness of that story and our reading it to her at night for instance, when you go to bed, helped her to understand what was about to occur.
With her family's support, Grace is now off the diet and seizure-free.
"Mom and Dad love Grace very much."
And every once in a while she likes to take a look at the drawings. After all, the story has a happy ending and she's the star of the show. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
